WEAVING VOICES: Slotervaart in Transitie
Community research project and residency (April and May 2023)
About the project
Weaving Voices: Slotervaart in Transition is a community art project initiated by conceptual textile artists Rosa Smits and Nina van Hartskamp in collaboration with Bureau Postjesweg.
In April and May 2023, we transformed Bureau Postjesweg into a weave and dye studio to share our practice with the neighbourhood and investigate how the spatial developments (gentrification), that are currently taking place, influence the lives of old and new residents of Slotervaart.
During the residency we communally wove on a construction fence (Weaving in Slotervaart) with old clothing from residents at various locations in Slotervaart, organised story-sharing events (Voices of Slotervaart) and interviewed various people about the transitions in Slotervaart and their personal experience.
How do old and new local residents experience these transitions and what do they need in order to feel at home together?

Weaving Voices: Slotervaart in Transitie is een community art project onder leiding van conceptuele textielkunstenaars Rosa Smits en Nina van Hartskamp in samenwerking met Bureau Postjesweg.
In april en mei 2023 hebben we Bureau Postjesweg omgetoverd tot een openbaar weef- en verfatelier om onze praktijk met de buurt te delen en te onderzoeken hoe de ruimtelijke ontwikkelingen (gentrificatie), die momenteel plaatsvinden, het leven van oude en nieuwe Slotervaarders beïnvloeden.
Tijdens de residentie weefden we gezamenlijk op een bouwhek (Weven in Slotervaart) met oude kleding van bewoners op verschillende locaties in Slotervaart, organiseerden we verhalen-deel events (Voices of Slotervaart) en interviewden we verschillende mensen over de transities in Slotervaart en hun persoonlijke ervaring.
Hoe ervaren oude en nieuwe buurtbewoners deze transities en wat hebben zij nodig om zich samen thuis te voelen?

Weaving in Slotervaart
On Saturdays during the residency, we stood at various places in Slotervaart (August Allebéplein, Overtoomse Veld and Postjesweg) with a construction fence and old clothes from local residents. The action was an invitation to weave together and share personal stories about Slotervaart and the transitions, which we recorded.
The construction fence serves as a metaphor for the spatial developments (gentrification) that are currently taking place in Slotervaart and was donated by Bot Bouw (a local construction company that is currently building a large tower block opposite Bureau Postjesweg).

Tijdens de residentie stonden we op zaterdagen op verschillende plekken in Slotervaart (August Allebéplein, Overtoomse Veld en Postjesweg) met een bouwhek en oude kleren van buurtbewoners. De actie was een uitnodiging om te weven en persoonlijke verhalen te delen die we opnamen over Slotervaart en de transities.
Het bouwhek dient als metafoor voor de ruimtelijke ontwikkelingen (gentrificatie) die op dit moment plaatsvinden in Slotervaart en was gedoneerd door Bot Bouw (een plaatselijk bouwbedrijf dat momenteel een grote torenflat bouwt tegenover Bureau Postjesweg).

On 18th and 24th of April we hosted story-sharing events Voices of Slotervaart. We turned Bureau Postjesweg into a public living room for the neighbourhood to create a soft space for exchanging personal stories about the transitions in Slotervaart.
With contribution by Abdelkader Benali, Karima Aissaoui, Iris Dik, Chaimae Bouzagaoui, Abi Patat and his daughter and neighbourhood.
Voices of Slotervaart
Op 18 en 24 april organiseerden we story-sharing events Voices of Slotervaart. We transformeerde Bureau Postjesweg in een publieke huiskamer. Waar we ruimte te schepten voor het uitwisselen van persoonlijke verhalen over de transities in Slotervaart.
Met bijdrage van Abdelkader Benali, Karima Aissaoui, Iris Dik, Chaimae Bouzagaoui, Abi Patat en zijn dochter en buurt.

Weaving Voices as Threads of Communities
Weaving Voices: Slotervaart in Transition is part of a two year project Weaving Voices as Threads of Communities. An Erasmus+ project, in which seven organisations in Germany, France, Hungary, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands jointly explore their participatory practices and share their research and practice with people who have less access to culture and art throughout Europe.
During our residency Rosa Smits and I hosted a workshop week (19th – 26th of April) for our partners at Bureau Postjesweg. With contributions by the Feministische Handwerk Partij, Liza Pins, Michał Jurys (Pear Paper) and Matilde van Beekhuizen. ‘’When many hands are involved the meaning of objects and space elevate, as they become ingrained with a multitude of stories interconnecting.’’
