Seeds of an interracial monologue; bought, given or stolen?

Installation/podcast/weave, 2017 NL

How to deal with the black pages of colonial pasts?

I’m a Dutch girl born in a loving family, therefore I’m enjoying many  privileges. What responsibility do I have within a country that was partly build on the  exploitation of others?

In this research I searched for (in)visible traces of our colonial history within the public space. A journey that led along, statues of national ‘heroes’ like Jan Pieterzoon Coen and Peter Stuyvesand, Het Tropenmuseum and eventually in a confrontation with two men; an artist from Cameroon and an activist with Papuan ancestors. I asked them which role I could play in their fight against injustice.

The story that enfolded is captured in a podcast; The seeds of an interracial monologue – Bought, given or stolen? The questions that arose throughout the research are woven into an ongoing textile banner. Together they were presented as an installation.
